Guards are supplied to any ships that apply for them whether British or foreign. The late piracy regulations stipulated that six men had to be sent but nowadays most of the smaller ships carry four, which means that the men have to work watch and watch for long periods on the longer coastal runs.

9, When a shore the guards live in a Deru ar lodging house which is usually run by a senior native police sergeant. Both ashore and afloat the guards provide their own food.
